Frequently asked questions

What is NPS and who can invest?
NPS (National Pension System) is a government-backed retirement savings scheme regulated by PFRDA. Any Indian citizen aged 18–70 can open an NPS account. Returns depend on your chosen asset allocation across equity, corporate bonds, and government securities.
What are NPS returns?
NPS returns depend on your fund and asset allocation. Equity (E) funds have historically returned 10–12% CAGR. Corporate bonds (C) return ~8–9% and government securities (G) return ~7–8%. Active and auto-choice plans are available.
How much can I withdraw from NPS at retirement?
At age 60 (normal retirement), you can withdraw 60% of the corpus as a tax-free lump sum. The remaining 40% must be used to purchase an annuity that pays monthly pension. Partial withdrawals are permitted after 3 years for specific purposes.
What are the tax benefits of NPS?
NPS offers tax deduction under Section 80CCD(1) up to 10% of salary (within ₹1.5L 80C limit), plus an additional ₹50,000 deduction under 80CCD(1B). The 60% lump sum withdrawal at maturity is completely tax-free.
