Frequently asked questions

How is UK income tax calculated?
Income tax is calculated on taxable income (gross minus personal allowance of £12,570). Basic rate: 20% on £12,571–£50,270; higher rate: 40% on £50,271–£125,140; additional rate: 45% above £125,140. Personal allowance tapers by £1 for every £2 above £100,000.
What is National Insurance (NI)?
National Insurance (Class 1 employee) is charged at 8% on earnings between £12,570–£50,270 and 2% above £50,270. NI contributes to your State Pension entitlement and other benefits. Rates for 2024/25 were reduced from 12% to 8%.
How does salary sacrifice pension affect take-home pay?
Salary sacrifice reduces your pensionable earnings before tax and NI are calculated. This means you pay less income tax AND less National Insurance — effectively the government and your employer subsidise your pension contribution.
What is the personal allowance for 2025/26?
The UK personal allowance remains frozen at £12,570 through 2025/26. This means the first £12,570 of income is tax-free. However, if your income exceeds £100,000, the personal allowance tapers by £1 for every £2 above that threshold.
