Frequently asked questions

How does a time card calculator work?
Enter your clock-in time, clock-out time, and unpaid break minutes for each day. The calculator converts each shift to decimal hours, sums the week, splits regular from overtime hours past 40, and multiplies by your rate for gross pay.
How do I convert time card minutes to decimals?
Divide minutes by 60: a shift of 8 hours 20 minutes is 8.33 decimal hours. Standard payroll rounding: 15 minutes = 0.25, 20 = 0.33, 30 = 0.50, 40 = 0.67, 45 = 0.75. This calculator does the conversion automatically.
What is the 7-minute rule for time cards?
Under FLSA rounding rules, employers may round punches to the nearest quarter hour: punches within 7 minutes past the quarter round down, 8+ minutes round up. Rounding must be neutral over time — it cannot systematically favor the employer.
Can my employer change my time card?
Employers may correct genuine errors, but must pay for all hours actually worked. Shaving recorded hours to avoid overtime is wage theft under the FLSA. Keep your own record of shifts — this calculator's URL preserves your entries for reference.
