Frequently asked questions

What is the HECS-HELP repayment threshold for 2026-27?
You start repaying once repayment income exceeds $69,528 (indexed annually). Below that, no compulsory repayment applies for the year.
How does the marginal repayment system work?
Since 1 July 2025 you repay 15c per dollar of income above the threshold (up to $129,717), then 17c per dollar beyond, with total repayment capped at 10% of income. Earning one more dollar can no longer cost you thousands, which was the flaw of the old cliff-based system.
Does my HELP debt charge interest?
No interest, but the balance is indexed each 1 June — now to the lower of CPI and the Wage Price Index (backdated to 2023). Indexation applies to the balance remaining after your repayments.
Should I make voluntary HECS repayments?
Usually only if the after-tax return beats your alternatives: HELP debt is the cheapest debt most Australians hold. Paying just before indexation (late May) avoids that year’s indexation on the amount paid. Compare against your mortgage offset first.
