APY (Annual Percentage Yield)

APY is the real rate of return you earn on savings or an investment in one year, including the effect of compound interest. Because it accounts for compounding, APY is always equal to or higher than the stated interest rate. Banks use APY to advertise savings accounts and CDs.

Example

A savings account paying 5% interest compounded monthly has an APY of about 5.12%.
